GAME OF BOWLS
FURTHER CLUB OPENINGS PENNANT COMPETITION BY SKIP Fine weather conditions on Saturday favoured the functions of the five bowling clubs which commenced their season. The great majority of the clubs have now opened. There was a large attendance of bowlers and visitors at the Carlton green. Mr. A. Taylor, the president of the club for tlio new season, is a player with more than average ability. In his new office ho should worthily uphold the high traditions of the club not only by his executive faculty but also on the playing area. - A very old member who had not occupied the presidential position beforo, Mr. F. Worsfolrl, opened the last seasou at West End. A member equally as old who* had not hitherto aspired (o the honour, Mr. K. Noton, performed the duty on Saturday. West End is one of the few fortunate clubs in Auckland having little or no liability. Although the playing area is small, the club has a fine record. Of late years the club's teams havo been prominent in the pennant competition, while its representatives have won many contests in open tournaments.
The Ellerslie Club, which opened on Saturday, has amplo playing accommodation for the residents of the district, in which bowling is one of the popular pastimes. The club has a largo membership The two Auckland Club members, Messrs. S. Coldic.utt and W. Matheson, of the Centro Executive, were deputed to attend the Otaliuhu Clutb's gathering on Saturday and were welcomed and entertained by the president, Mr. L. Rule,- and the members. Tlio cluh's fine summer green last season is again likely to play well. The llallyburton-Johnstone Club's season was opened by the president, Mr. G. TToldsworth. Surrounded by the grounds of other sporls the club's greens make a picturesque setting amid an extensive area embracing tennis and croquet. The outlook for the continuance of the pennant competition, which was rather uncertain for some time on account of tho petrol restrictions, is now more promising. A decision as to whether this season's matches are to be played will be made at n meeting of the centre executive this week. The usual trek of bowlers to the clubs holding tournaments took place on Monday. The largest open events were held at Roinucra, which included the half-day on Saturday, as well as Monday, and at Mount Eden.
