LICENSEES WARNED
LIQUOR SALE BREACHES TRANSACTIONS IN STREET PRISON TERM IN FUTURE [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION"] WELLINGTON, Friday Prison penalties for licensees who in future persist in contravening the licensing laws were promised by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., when imposing a fine of £SO on Vincent Boland, licensee of the Royal Tiger Hotel, on a charge of aiding and abetting the unlawful supply of liquor. Describing the barman who made the sale in the street as a mere tool, the magistrate said it was the first time such a case had been sheeted home to a licensee, and the Courts were always averse to imposing drastic punishment on such an occasion. It could go forth, however, that in future, on proof ot" such a case, the licensee would go to prison for a month. The barman, Leslie Johnson, was fined £2 on one of two charges. The evidence showed that the barman was making sales in the street. Police officers hought on the street, and saw others being supplied. They also said Boland had been warned on a number of occasions. On certain nights there had been large numbers of men congregated on corners, and they had caused a great deal of annoyance to the police.
