TIMBER SUPPLIES
economy IN USE v PROMPT FILLiNG OF ORDERS MINISTER'S APPEAL TO TRADE'/ » [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION"] WELLINGTON, Friday "Broadly speaking, all sections of.the community actively engaged in some phase or other of the timber trade hare shown an excellent appreciation of the necessity for rationing the use 0 f timber during the present emergency," said the Minister of Supply, tho Hon/-*'-D. G. Sullivan, "Sawmillers, timber merchants, ith./j.. porters and many builders and other - / users of timber arc carefully husbanding existing stocks of those locally produced and imported timbers which are in» relatively short supply. At the same time a number of individual exceptipns have been brought to the attention of the Timber Controller, which indicates • the necessity for the Government making an appeal to everyone concerned to exercise even more care and discrimination in the use of timber, particularly imported timbers, 'which are wholly required for essential specialised uses,, and of heart grades of New Zealand timbers, which are likewise required for permanent building jind constructional work. ( "The importance of using up existing stocks of timber, which nre normally in small demand, and of concentrating upon the employment of other than heart timbers for temporary buildings; whether for defence or civilian uses, cannot be over-emphasised. The sa<rmilling industry is well equipped to meet both emergency and normal demands, and no delay in the delivery of adequate supplies for either purpose ' should occur in most cases. Where, however, any particularly large order has to be placed it is suggested that any possible delay in delivery can be eliminated by reference, to the Con. servators of Forests at Auckland, Rotorua, Palmerston' North, Nelson, Christchurch, Hokitika arid Invercargill. ; : "These officers, together with the Timber Controller, are engaged on the co-ordination and distribution of large orders for both defence and civilian works, whereby prompt deliveries may be effected, and likewise they should be consulted regarding availability of special timbers for any particular purpose. It is hoped by the co-operation of all concerned that any interference with the normal timber trade conditions of the community aaay be obviated."'
