PORTRAIT FOR CITY

CAPTAIN irOBSON GIFT BY SIR ERNEST DAVIS V THE COUNCIL'S APPRECIATION The gift of an oil portrait of Captain William Hobson, the first Governor. was made to the city last night by the Mayor. Sir Ernest Davis. This portrait was the work of Miss X. Lois White, of Auckland, and was an enlarged copy of a small painting of HSbson in the Old Colonists' Museum. Sir Ernest said he had had this painting done as he wished the city to have a worthy portrait nj the founder of Auckland and he asked the council to accept it on behalf of the citizens. Sir Ernest also drew attention to the painting of the Earl of Auckland, which had been cleaned and restored. It was seen that this painting, which was presented to the city by' the present Lord Auckland, had been beautifully restored, the colours having recovered their former brightness.. The two pictures were hung on the wall at the back of the mayoral dais, those of Captain James Cook and Sir John Logan Campbell occupying positions on either side. Mr. J. A. C. Allum, in moving that the council place on record its appreciation of the very generous gift made by the Mayor, said that with this gift the council had worthy representations of those associated with the earlv'history of Auckland. The motion was seconded by Miss L. Melville, who said she was sure the citizens would be very appreciative of the gift. As chairman qf the Librarv Committee, Miss Melville said she would be glad if the council would agree to have the portraits of Lord Auckland and Captain Hobson exhibited at the j Art Gallery so that the public could view them. _ Otlier members also spoke Ixl appreciation of the gift-. Mr. J. J. Sullivan remarking that althougltffrequent reference was made to Captain Hobsou as a great Englishman, he was indeed a truly great Irishman from County Waterford. . , The resolution was carried by acclamation.
