AMERICAN WATERS
battleship at sea SUSPICIOUS ACTION OF LINER SUBMARINES IN PACIFIC By Telegraph—Press Association—Cops - right (Received October 5, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YOBK, Oct. 4 Although the Mexican authorities claim that no war materials are on board, the departure of the 32,000-ton German liner Columbus from Vera Gruz to Point Anton Lizardo, 12 miles away, has given rise to suspicion that she is proposing to refuel the German battleship Admiral Scheer—which is stated to have sunk the British steamer Clement off the coast of Brazil—or to begin com-merce-raiding herself. The move was made ostensibly in order to shelter from the north wind. However, the Pilot's Manual states that this point affords no protection whatever. Arriving at Bahia, with 30 of the crew of the Clement, the chief officer; Mr. Jones, confirmed that the Admiral Scheer was responsible for the sinking of the steamer. The Buenos Aires newspaper Noticias Graficas states that a foreign warship, believed to be German, was sighted last week off Puerto Deseado, Patagonia, about 360 miles north of the Straits of Magellan. From Valparaiso it is reported, but not confirmed, that a German submarine entered the harbour last night and anchored near the German steamer Dresden until dawn and then left. The American freighter Texmar reports sighting a submarine on Monday night near San Benito Island, 360 miles south of Los Angeles. Two German ships which had been taking refuge at Reykjavik, Icsland, departed unexpectedly.
