BOXING TITLES

AUCKLAND AMATEURS ANNUAL TOURNEY FINALISED LARGE CROWD THRILLED WINNERS OF THE DIVISIONS ,Tn keeping with the standard displayed on the second night of the tournament the semi-final and final bouts of the Auckland Boxing Association's annual amateur provincial championship tournament, which was concluded at the Town Hall last evening, provided a crowd which almost ftllcd the house with both entertainment and thrills which are not always associated with pugilistic encounters. Contrary to the usual order, the spectators were mostly in accord with the decisions of the officials, and only once or twice was there any dissension. There was a storm of disapproval in regard to the decision given to J. Jenkins against J. McAlpine in the final of the bantam-weight class. McAlpine had the better of the first round and Jenkins the second. The third saw a willing exchange of punching. McAlpine was tired after a previous contest, whereas Jenkins was fresh. But for this fact McAlpine, a very promising novice, may have succeeded. Special Trophies Awarded The fact that the spectators thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment was proved by the spontaneous awarding of trophies to the losers of very strenuous bouts. Among the donors was a lady patron. The trophies in each instance went to F. E. Andrews, flyweight; R. King, fly-weight; J. McAlpine, bantam-weight; G. B. Nelson, cruiser-weight. The trophy for the most scientific boxer was awarded by the judges and referees to R. Branch, who wins the Craig Cup. R. Nixon won the Painter Cup for the best loser at the tournament, while the Kohn Shield for the most successful trainer went to E. Donovan, who turned out five winners. F. Pearcey was second with three and T. B. Ewens was third with one. Team for Championships The team to represent Auckland at the New Zealand championships will be selected later.
