AUSTRALIAN FIGURES FLOOD OF REFUGEES [FROM OCR ow correspondent] a " SYDNEY, Aug. 25 Nearly 4000 European refugees have already entered Australia under the special scheme announced by the Federal Government early this year to ... I admit 15,000 refugees in. three years. [Landing permits already granted total ! more than 12,000, but the Government will - not allow .the quota Lof 15,000 to be exceeded in any circumstances. Of the refugees already in Australia,' 1516 have settled in New South Wabs, 1085 in Victoria, 20S„in Western Aystralia, 134 in South Australia® 108 "in Queensland, and 22 in Tasnuvtlia, while (322 did not state their destination. •• German refugees, including Austrian.';, totalled 3224 and Czechs 464. The rest, were "stateless." ' , . A similar analysis of all white alien immigration to Australia for the. year ended June 30 last shows that landing permits were issued to 15.805, compared with 8705 in the previous year. AH those to whom landing ' permits were issued did not come to Australia in the year. . - ; Nationalities of the immigrants were: —Germans. 7109; Italians..24o2; Poles, 1151; Hungarians, 955; Greeks, 825; Czechs. 600; Russians,.344; Yugoslavs, 476; Alabamans, 252; and others, 1571. - Of the total permits granted 4621 persons signified their intention to settle in Sydney and 412 jv-ithin 100 miles , cf Sydney.
