COLONIAL DEFENCE ISSUE The question of garrisoning the Australian coaling depots with Imperial troops was. attracting attention 50 years ago. The following appeared in the New Zealand Herald of August 25 1889:—. _ b '.'The Daily Telegraph savs the - colonies are invited to concur in garrisoning Thursday Tsland and King George's Sound with Imoerial troops at the colonial expense. This is the second i proposal of military vassalage which has emanated from the present Colonial Conference, the first being the naval tribute scheme. It is urged that the depots should be • manned by Australians. The Queensland Government insists on this being done, while Mr. Gillies. Premier of Victoria.- is in favour of Imperial troops."
