SHORTAGE OF LABOUR
POSITION IN GERMANY i GREAT NEED FOR DOMESTICS [FROM A SPECIAL LONDON, Aug. 1 To remedy the shortage of domestics in Germany it is suggested this week by the Labour Front organ, "The German Householder," that the only families allowed to employ servants should bo those iu which there is too much work to be done by the housewife alone. Examples cited include households with several children; households where the wife works outside, or households where there arc old people or invalids. The paper adds that well-to-do housewives should not he allowed to luro servants from mothers with many children bv olforing them higher wages. The general shortage of labour is. now estimated at 1.000.000, ,3,50.000 feeing required in industry, 250.000 in agriculture. and 100.000 in domestic service. To meet this demand it is urged that existing measures of labour con-, trol should bo tightened up. The argument that a man can work, where ho likes and at what he likes is described bv the Borsen Zeitung as '•Bolshevism." It is urged that the supply of young, people coming on to the market should be reckoned, in order to pi'erent children from going to certain jobs- simply becauso tliev most attractive.
