GERMAN TROOPS
PRESENCE" ON BOEDER EXTENSION OF ZONE ACTIVITY REPORTED ALARM OF INHABITANTS By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received August 20, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. 19 German troops are strung out> along at least 100 miles of the Polish-Slovak frontier, a far greater distance than was fixed when Germany guaranteed Slovakia's independence by the treaty of last March, says the Bratislava correspondent of the British Associated Press.
Tens of thousands of troops have been observed in the vicinity of Zilina, where the townsfolk arc preparing to fleo from their homes at a moment's notice. Other troops aro moving up in the mountainous regions to the northeast, described strategically as Poland's back door.
The German military staff is reported to have assumed complete control in the country areas, although Bratislava in the meantime ostensibly remains under Slovak authority. General Csatloa, commander of the Slovak Army, resigned last week after refusing a German suggestion that he should send two Slovak divisions to the Polish frontier, but the National Council persuaded him to retain the command, which is now worthless. The Germans last night closed down two Czech newspapers and all the Jewish newspapers in Slovakia.
