SETBACK TO PASTURES

WATTUTO CONDITIONS LOSSES OF LAMBS OCCUR MARKETS GENERALLY FIRM The weather last week was comparatively mild and gave promise of an early spring, but unfortunately-one of the coldest snaps of the season was experienced at the week-end. Snow fell in - some districts. As a result, apart from retarding pasture growth, with the lambing season practically at its height, fairly heavy losses were sustained in some of the higher country. In spite of the adverse weather, practically all sections of the stock market have remained firm. There is still a good demand for good quality dairy cows and heifers close to profit and recent values for this class have been fully maintained. The inquiry for yearling Jersey heifers remains keen and prices for better-class heifers tend to firm.

Store cattle are also in request. Tho advertised line of East Coast stationbred cattle offered at the Morrinsville centre came forward in fair order, and although tho majority were on tho small side, competition from local and outside buyers was keen and lato quotations were fully maintained.

Conditions in the separate sections are us follows:

BEEF 1 The beef market has been fairly well supplied during the current week and as a result values have shown little alteration. Several consignments of choice cow and iieifer beef were penned at both the To Avvninutu and Morrinsville centres and values realised were fully up to central yard rates. Ox beef was penned in less than average numbers at the Frankton sale on Tuesday and sold under steady competition at full late rates. Butchers operated freely lor a smaller yarding of cow beef and here 'again prices were fully on a par with previous sale rates. Extra choice ox was quoted to 34s per 3 001b, and choice young cov and heifer beef to 30s per 1001b. Heavy prime steers made £l4 to £l4 15s; prime, £l2 10s to £l3 10s; lighter prime, £ll to £l2; extra prime young cows and heifers, £lO to £ll 10s; prime, £8 to £9 10s; lighter, £6 10s to £7 10s. MUTTON A slight improvement in prices for fat sheep has been recorded at some saleu, duo to the smaller yardings which have been coming forward this week, but it is doubtful if prices will go much higher, as there still appear to bo fair supplies in sight and entries will probably be heavier next week. Tho offering of fat sheep at the central yards on Tuesday was the smallest seen at this centre for somo considerable timi!, and as a result competition was keener throughout and on tho whole quotations were higher. Some outstanding vvetners were penned and realised 345. Fat ewes were again in short supply, and hero also, last week's top price was exceeded. Extra prime wethers made 31s to 34 s; prime, QBs to 30s; lighter prime, 25s to 27s 6d; light, 23s to 24s 6d; extra prime ewes, 25s to 275; prime, 22s 6d to 24s Gd; lighter. IBs to 21s; killablo, 16s to 18s. PIGS, Although prices for baconers showed a considerable drop at the Frankton sale on Tuesday, values for porkers and buttermilk pigs were practically on a par with recent quotations. At the outside sales prices for both baconers and porkers have been well sustained and tho decrease recorded for baconers on Tuesday may not be a tiue indication of the strength of the market. Stores and weaners are coming forward in largo numbers, but the demand is fully equal to the supply and .recent high rates have in some cases been exceeded. Baconers sell from £3 3s to £4 2s; heavy porkers and buttermilk pigs, £2 15s to £3; medium porkers, £2 10s to £2 14s; light, £2 5s to £2 9s; largo stores, £2 to £2 7s; slips, 30s to 375; best weaners. 28s 6d to 3ls; medium, 22s to 255; smaller, 18s to 21s. YARDING AT KAUROA The Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company, Limited, reports having held the Kauroa stock sale, when a medium penning of all classes of cattle came, forward. Included in the offering was a line of wellbred Polled Angus steers on account of Mr. W. J. Lusty. Tne cattle- were yarded in good condition and met with keen competition. Odd beef cows and heifers sold at late rates, while boner cows showed no alteration on schedule values. A few dairy cattle sold readily. Light fat Jersey heifers made £5 15s to-£G ss; killable cows, £4 to £5; heavy boner cows, £3 to £3 15,5; medium, £2 To £2 10s; canner cows, 2os to 355; three-year Polled Angus steers, to £8 4s; two and a-nalf year Polled Angus steers, £0 15s to £7 ss; two-year Polled Angus steers, £6 to £6 4s; 18 months Polled Angus steers, £5 to £o 10s; good quality springing Jersey heifers, £7 10s to £S; dairy cows, September calvers, £6 10s to £7 ss. c .
