NEW WHAKATANE PARK
MAORI NAME ADOPTED [I)Y TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHAKATANE, Thursday The Whakatane Borough Council decided to adopt the name of Wairaka Dominion Centennial Park for the new park lit Whakatane Heads, after it had received a delegation from the Bay of Plenty Maori and Historical Research Society at its last meeting. A suggestion to change the name of The Strand, Whakatano's main street, to Matatua Street, was not approved. Members.of the delegation said these were honoured tribal names among the Matatua people and their adoption would give the Maoris of the Bay of Plenty an interest in the centennial 'celebrations which might otherwise be lacking. To the Maori tlio canoe represented what the flag did to the pakeha. The council'agreed that was a suitable name for the park, since it stood on the very spot on which Wairaka, of the captain of the Matatua canoe used the phi'ase which gave Whakatane its name. It , was agreed that The Strand was quite inappropriate as a name, but the Mayor, Sir. B. S. Barry, said the business people did. not favour a, change' of. name, which might lead to some disorganisation*
