SIGNALLERS' CORPS
FIRST ANNUAL BALL INGENIOUS DECORATIONS MANX GUESTS INVITED [by telegraph—own correspondent] WELLINGTON, Friday Ingenious decorations wore features of the first annual ball of the New Zealand Corps of Signallers, Central District Signal Company, held at St. Francis Hall to-night. The Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, and Mrs. Jones,, were invited to be guests of honour. The hall was gay with festoons of flags strung from corner to corner, while around the walls were signal Hags as reminders of the work of the company. Along the front of the balcony were festoons of blue and white, while prominent in the decorative scheme were replicas of the corps badge, representing Hermes standing on the globe surmounted by a crown. On the stage, one at each side, were automatic signals, one sending out messages and the other replies. These were working throughout the evening, those who were able to, proudly deciphering them to their less learned friends. In the supper room were green baskets of spring flowers, the tables also carrying streamers of light blue, dark blue and green. The light blue was for air signals, the dark blue for signals at sea and the green for those on the land.
The host for the evening was Captain G. L. Agar, Officer Commanding, and receiving with him were Captain L. Marshall and Mrs. Marshall. Also present were Colonel J. G. Young, Director of Signallers, and Mrs. Young, and Major E. H. Green, assistant director, and Mrs. Green. In spite of the wet weather there was a very large attendance, the success of this first attempt auguring well for future fixtures.
