YOUNG WOMAN'S DEATH
COMPANION GRAVELY HURT RETURNING HOME FROM DANCE [by TELEGRAPH —T'UFSS association] MASTERTON, Thursday A young woman was killed and a youth gravely injured in a motor collision on the Masterton-C'arterton road between one and two o'clock this morning. The victims were: —
*■' Killed ~ Miss Eleanor Arini Stubbs, agtd 19, a daughter of Mrs. A. F. Stubbs, of Carterton. She suffered a broken neck and severe head injuries. Injured
Warren Burling, aged 18, a son of Mr. C. A. Burling, of Masterton. Severe head and other injuries. Condition critical. > ' ■ A sedan car driven by Burling, who, with Miss Stubbs as a passenger, was returning home from a dance in-.Mas-tertoii, collided with"a lorry travelling in the opposite direction. The lorry was driven bv Mr. Alexander, and the owner, Mr. Brcnley, was a passenger. The car struck the lorry behind the driver's seat.
Miss Stubbs died on the way to the hospital at Carterton. Burling was admitted to the hospital. The occupants of the lorry were not, injured. CONSTABLE KILLED CAR RUNS OFF BRIDGE YOUNG FAMILY LEFT INVESTIGATING FARM TRAGEDY [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION*] "WAIMATE, Thursday The double tragedy at Redcliffe, where two brothers were found shot, was followed by another,, a constable being -.killed in a motor accident. The victim was:— Constable W. J. Watt. Constables W. J. Watt and F. J. Black were motoring to Bedcliffe lastnight to investigate the tragedy when their car crashed through the rails of the Elephant. Hill Creek bridge, falling 12ft. . , Constable Watt was removed to hospital, where he died at seven o'clock this morning. Constable Black suffered injuries, but his condition 'is not serious. Constable Black- has five young children and Constable Watt left three, the youngest being nine months. FATE OF CYCLIST FALL GOING DOWN HILL HEAD INJURIES SUFFERED [by telegraph—own correspondent] STRATFORD. Thursday A cyclist was killed in Brecon Road, Stratford, la'st night, when he fell from his cycle while riding down a hill. The victim was:— Mr. Thomas Farrell, aged 41, single. Mr. Farrell was carrying an attache case, and it appears that he freewheeled down a short hill and caught his knee on the case when he resumed pedalling. This evidently jammed the handlebars round, causing Mr. Farrell to be thrown to the road. He received head injuries which are believed to have caused almost instant death. Mr. Farrell was well known in the district and was keenly interested in football, having been a member of the Stratford Rugby Club for many years. His mother died in December and •it is believed that he had few, if any, close relatives in New Zealand.
