MODEL YACHTING
ORAKEI BASIN CLUB DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES The Orakei Basin Model Yacht Clnb held its annual social and distribution of prizes in the Remuera Returned Soldiers' Club rooms on Saturday night. There was a good attendance of members and visitors. Apologies were received on behalf of the patron, Dr. Craven, and tho president, Mr. A. Bevins. In extending a welcome to the visitors, the commodore, Mr. A. R. Bevins, slated that the past season had been a successful one. The club was in a sound financial position and, while the membership of the juniors had increased, there had been a slight falling off in the senior division." Although off the beaten track, the Orakei Basin was an ideal place for model yachting, and tho club, which started ten years ago, was as popular as ever. Referring to tho annual harbour race for model yachts promoted by tho Tamaki Yacht Club, Mr. Bevins said that, while the race appealed to .model yacht owners, *it would become more popular if it could he held earlier in the season. Ho would also like to seo more inter-club racing and hoped it would be revived in the near future. Mr. G. M. Dennes, chairman of the Auckland Anniversary Regatta Committee, who presented tho prizes, congratulated the club on its splendid array of cups and other trophies. As commodore of the Heme Bay •Tuuior Yacht Club, ho was particularly interested in the Orakei model club, which, likfj his own club, was teaching boys the art of small boat sailing. Jhe Auckland Yinnivtfrsary regatta, Mr. Dennes said, appreciated what tho Orakei club had done in carrying out the regatta committee's annual fixture on tho basin, and arrangements were being mnde for a big programme to be carried out this season in conjunction with tho marine activities committee. On behalf of tho llerno Bay clnb, Mr. Dennes invited the junior members of the Orakei club to spend an afternoon on tho harbour in the boats of tho Silver Fern class.
