OBITUARY

DB.. JOHN EWAKT SERVICE IN WELLINGTON [BY TELKGRAPH —I'JtF.SS ASSOCIATION] AVELLINGTOX, Saturday The death has occurred of Dr. John Ewart, former medical superintendent of the Wellington Hospital. Dr. Ewart was born in Scotland, the son of Mr. Robert Ewart. and in 188!) he married Miss Grace Brandon, and had one son and two daughters. He was educated at Annan Academy and Edinburgh University, gaining the degree of bachelor of medicine in 1880 and advancing to doctor of medicine in 1885, 'taking the latter degree with distinction. He came to the Dominion two years later, taking up the position of medical superintendent of the Timaru Hospital. From 1885' to 1909 he occupied a similar position at the Wellington Hospital, since when he had been aif honorary surgeon.

MR. P. S. SEAMON [BY TELEGRAPH- —OWN COIinKSrONDKNT] NAPIER, Saturday

The death has occurred in Napier of Mr. Ferdinand Samuel Seamon, a retired banker and formerly in the service of the National Bank of New Zealand. Mr. Seamon, who retired at the end of 1920 after about JO years with the bank, was born in Stoke Ncwitigton, England, in 1867. He came to New Zealand as a young man and entered the service of the bank in Wellington. Mr. Seamon first came to Napier in 1901, having been appointed accountant. After a time ho was in charge of Napier branch and was then appointed to the inspectorial staff, with headquarters in Wellington. About he returned to Napier at his own request and remained in charge there till his retirement. Mr. Seamon is survived bv his wife and two daughters. MR. J. HOOKER [vnOM OUH OWN COHIIKSrONDKNT] CAMBRIDGE, Sunday The death has occurred of one of the best-known residents of Cambridge, Mr. James Hooker, aged 84. Mr. Hooker was • born at New Plymouth. He was educated there, and at an early* ago he went farming at Tataraimaka. Later he entered the carrying business on his own account in New Plymouth. In 1896 lie went fanning again at Omata. Mr. Hooker sold his Omata property in 1903 and came to Cambridge, where he took up a farm at Pukeroro. In 1920 lie visited England and on his return lie retired and resided in Cambridge until his death. Mr. Hooker was a member of the former Cambridge Road Hoard and a former director of the Cambridge Dairy Company. He was also, up to the time of his death, vice-chairman of the Domain Board. He had the distinction of (37 years' membership of the Manchester Unity Lodge. . . • , Mr. Hooker is survived by his second wife, two sons and four daughters. LATE MR. C. A. BATES .[by tklkgr.wh—own couukspondf.nt] ROTORUA, Sunday The longest cortege in Rotorua for many years was seen at the funeral vesterdav morning of the late Mr. Cvril Albert Bates, who was well known in the motor industry throughout the Auckland Province. Over 100 cars followed the casket to the Ngongotalia Cemetery, those in attendance including- representatives of the transport industry throughout the Auckland, Wnikato and Bay of Plenty districts. Floral emblems and messages of sympathy were received from all parts of the Dominion. ' « THE REV, T. A.«NORRIE X!ie death occurred in Coromanrlel yesterday of tlic Rev. Allan Norrie. aged .93, a veteran minister of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Norrie was a son of the Rev. Thomas Norrie. who came out from the Free Church of Scotland to' Auckland in 1855. settled at Papakura and was instrumental in erecting no fewer than 19 churches.

The Rev. T. A. Norrie received his training for the ministry al. the Theological Hall in Dunedin, and his first, charge was at Riwaka, m the Nelson district. He was ordained by the Nelson Presbytery in December, 1887. After a period at Te Aroha, Mr. Norrie was inducted to the charge of Coromandel in December, 1807, and from that centre he continued to minister to a widely scattered population over the ranges of the peninsula until his retirement about 15 years ago. He is survived by his wife and one son. MISS ALICE RIMMER Widely known at one time throughout New Zealand for her gifts as a singer. Miss Alice Himnior died suddenly in Auckland on Saturday. She was born in Southport, England, in 18(55, and as a girl of 12 she came to New Zealand with six others of the family. Her father, the late Mr.- Thomas Rinimer, was a farmer, and settled at Helensville. Miss Himmer was prominent in Auckland musical circles and became a teacher of music. In the Auckland Choral Society she was the soprano soloist, and at one* time she travelled through New Zealand as soloist with one of John Fuller's , companies. , For about 20 years Miss Rimnicr's home wns at Helensville, and then she came to Auckland for 30 years. Another 10 years we're spent at Helensville, and she finally returned to Auckland about 18 months ago. She was a very active supporter of the Helensville Methodist Church, and more recently was connected with the Mount Kden Methodist Church.

MRS. ELIZABETH DIXON One of the early settlers of Tarnnaki, Mrs. Elizalieth Dixon, died on Saturday in .Auckland in her 88tli year. Mrs. Dixon wns born in England and shortly after her marriage to*the late Mr. Benjamin- Dixon, in 1875. came to New Zealand in the sailing ship HnrumuV Together they passed through tho inevitable difficulties of the pioneering days. Later they moved to a farm ii}i the. Waiknto, and finally settled in Auckland. Mi'. Dixon died .'l.l years ago. Mrs. Dixon is survived by four sons nnd three,' daughters.
