TRAM EXTENSION
CAMPBELL KGAI) PLAN ONE TREE HILL ATTITUDE EXPLANATION BY THE MAYOR In reply to a protest made by Mr. W. H. Xagle, chairman of the Auckland Transport Board, against the One Tree Hill Borough Council having given publicity to the board's proposal to extend the present Great South Road tramline up Campbell Road while the matter was still being discussed in committee by the board, Mr. 1. .1. Goldstine, Mayor of One Tree Hill, has expressed his regret that tho action should have been regarded as a breach of confidence. "llr. Xagle called on me in company with tlie manager of the board, Mr. A. E. Ford," said Mr. Goldstine, when tho protest was referred to him. "Mr. Nagle informed me that tho matter had been discussed by the Transport Board in committee, and that before it was finally considered he felt that ho would like to have the opinion of the One Tree Hill Borough Council on the project. In view of his intimation that the matter had been dealt with by the board in committee, I asked him whether he desired to keep the matter in committee of my council. "Mr. Xagle's reply was that he did not care how the matter was dealt with. Ho thought -that it should bo brought before the council before final decision, and I agreed to bring it forward. J. brought it before my council in the ordinary way, and in view of Mr. Xagle's reply I did not for one moment think that it should be kept in committee, or that he desired that that should be done. "One other aspect I regret," continued Mr. Goldstine, "is that Mr. Xagle should consider that the press and the public have been misinformed as to tho real position. The full facts of the matter were disclosed by tho One Tree Hill Borough Council, a report from the town clerk was before it, and strong opposition was shown to the proposal. I have no hesitation in saying that Mr. Xagle is unable to point to any one fact mentioned in the report which is likely to mislead the public. I regret very much that Mr. Xagle should be under the impression that there has been any breach of confidence, when it is clear that there has been a misunderstanding on his part."
