In addition contributions have been received from the Auckland and Tc Awamutu Electric-Power' Boards, the Auckland Harbour Board and the Auckland Transport Board. Ten local bodies have paid, or promised sums less than the amount assessed, and 10 have refused to make any contribution. STATE ASSISTANCE LARGE SUM SUGGESTED '» ; .- .. /-/V: 5 • •• '' '• EXPENDITURE OF £164,355 SUBSIDIES FOR CELEBRATIONS [BT TELEGRAril —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHCRCH, Saturday A total sum of £164,355 is proposed by the Department of Internal Affairs to be spent on the Xew Zealand Centennial celebrations, according to a statement by the Minister, the Hon. W. E. Parry. This amount is additional to £2937 spent last year and £12,500 for the purchase of shares in the Centennial Exhibition, to which a loan of £25.000 has* been made already. , The main expenditure will be £75,000 as a £1 to £3 subsidy t,o Centennial controlling committees for district celebrations and memorials. The next largest item is £25.000 for costs incurred in connection with national celebrations held by the Government -and also to provide part of the cost of national celebrations being carried out by provincial Centennial councils in conjunction with the National Centennial Council. A similar sum is also provided for special assistance for Maori participation in Centennial celebrations and as a contribution toward the cost of the, whare-runanga at Waitangi and certain other Maori memorials. » . The major portion of the expenditure of £24,000 on biographical, historical, pictorial and survey publications and an atlas will be recovered during this year and next. - ... Assistance toward such gatherings as the International Jamboree of Boy Scputs, the Pan-Pacific Women's Conference. and the international gathering of Girl Guides will be found from, the grant of £SOOO. A-sum of £IOOO is set asido chiefly for literary competitions under tho auspices of the Historical Committee. A loan of £755 will be made to tho National Art Gallery and. the Dominion ' Museum Board of Trustees toward the expenses of the Centennial Art Exhibition. Music and drama festivals and competitions will cost £6OOO.
