WIND-SWEPT VALLEY

FENCES BLOWN DOWN SILT INVADES HOUSES ESK SETTLERS' ORDEAL [BT TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] NAPIER. Friday Settlers in Esk Valley, who suffered so severely from a flood a year ago last April, again underwent discomfort from the elements to-day by reason of a high wind blowing down the valley. The wind sent loose silt remaining from the flood whirling through the valley and out to sea. Fences have been blown - down and newly-sown pastures destroyed, and houses are once more receiving a coating of silt inside and out. In the stronger gusts it was difficult to stand against the wind, and at one stage telephone lines were threatened.- The gale, however, was not as severe as that experienced in the valley a few months after the flood of last year.
