RAW MATERIALS

PLANT AND. MACHINERY SUPPLIES FOR INDUSTRIES WELCOME RECOGNITION VIEWS OF MANUFACTURERS "While not wishing to comment on ,the wider implications of the transactions, manufacturers generally will note with satisfaction, firstly, the recognition on tlie part of the New Zealand Government of_ its obligations to existing industries, and, secondly, the desire to foster trade with the United Kingdom," said Mr. N, E. Crimp, secretary, in a statement issued on behalf of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association.

"The credits now available to finance private imports should overcome any difficulties in obtaining immediate requirements of raw materials and the plant and machinery required for extensions. Present staffs can be maintained only if raw materials are available, and plant and machinery are essential for development. The diversion of trade to the United Kingdom which will follow as a result of the negotiations is'in lino with the policy consistently supported by manufacturers' organisations. "It is noted also," said Mr. Crimp, "that Mr. Nash has discussed the issues with British manufacturing representatives, who must appreciate the benefits to be derived from the policy of buying from British firms. The viewpoint of the British Government respecting the Dominions was officially stated on July 120 of last year in the White Paper presented to the House of Commons as a result of discussions with representatives of the Australian Government. "It was then stated that United Kingdom Ministers recognise: (1) lhat, in the interests of both countries and of the British Empire as a whole, it is desirable for Australia to endeavour to bring about as soon as possible' a substantial increase in her population; (2) that it is impossible to achieve that objective solely or principally by an expansion of Australian primary industries; and (3) that there is _a xiecessitv to combine with such expansion a sound and progressive development of Australian secondary industries. What applies to Australia in these resjiects applies with equal force to New Zealand." ;i-
