DOUBLE LOSS SUFFERED DEATHS IN ENGLAND LONDON. July 19 The deaths are reported of' two men. famous in international sport, namely Tom Hayward, Surrey cricketer, ' and Harold Wagstaff, twice captain of English Rugby, League teams in Australia. . ' Hayward was associated with J." B.' Hobbs when the latter was starting- to make his name in English cricket. Hayward, who almost invariably opened with Hobbs, had a brilliant careor in -.first-class matches between 1593 and 1914. He. played in 29 matches against the Australians and in 51 innings, twice not out, scored 1747 runs at an average of 3. r ).GC>. He aggregated 2000 runs per season or; 10 occasions and scored over 1000 runs for 20 seasons in'succession. He was a stylish batsman, a master of all strokes, possessing exceptional hitting powers, while he was also a medium-paced bowler of class. , ~ ~, Wagstaff is well known by old followers of football in New Zealand. He was a member of the English Ttugby League teams which visited New Zealand in 1914 and 1020. Associated with the Huddersneld Club in England, Wagstaff had a brilliant recordin club and international football.
