Mr. Stewart proposed that, the name of the Strand, Whakatane's main, street, be changed to Matatua Street,' that the new "Centennial park at the heads be called Wairaka Park, atfer the daughter of Toroa, captain of tha canoe, and that the present Matatua Street be changed to .Joka-Atai Street, after the canoe's inchor, ig supposed to be in the river at the end of the street. - . . The name Wairaka was particularly appropriate, he said, as on the beach below the park occurred the incident from which came Whakatane's name.! If these changes were made, the Maoris! would work for the success of the celebrations.; .; The committee supported the suggestion, and it was decided that a full day of Maori and pakeha celebrations would be lield on the day the park - was opened.
