WORK UNDER NEW AWARD

AUSTRALIAN COAL MINERS STRIKE THREAT WITHDRAWN (Received July 14, 9.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 14 The northern coal miners have agreed to work under the new award, which becomes operative in Queensland next week, and in New South Wales on August 16. The threat of direct action has been withdrawn. Two thousand northern coal miners stopped work on June 30. four main pits being idle. Their action followed the general disappointment expressed with the new award issued by the Federal Arbitration Court, which provides for an eight-hour day mid a liveday week in the industry. The Court refused the union's claim for a minimum wage.

Later the miners' oflicials reviewed the award and induced them to return to work.
