HEAVY PASSING SHOWERs

The weather report and forecast f Xew Zealand issued by the Government meteorologist last evening were as fdi lows: —Yesterday's depression is centrednear the Chatham Islands and a second arv is now crossing the ' Tc' minion. An anti-cyclone centred near Tasmania is moving slowly on to tho south Tasman Sea. .The forecast' is, f or strong westerly winds at first in' the far north and moderate north-easterlies in West land; elsewhere winds from twecn south and south-west prevailing and becoming general by to-morrow strong in most places and reaching force in exposed positions. Seas verr rough north of Cape Kgmont and about Foveaux Strait, elsewhere moderate to rather rough at first, and rising later Eastern Tasman Sea: Winds strong to gaie force from between south and south-west in the northern portion,' and between south and south-east in the southern; seas rough to high. The weather is likely to be cold and,change, able, with passing showers, heavy i n mnnv places. Some hail is probable and snow on the lower levels in the southern half of the South Island.

COLD WITH PASSING SHOWERS

The Government meteorologist issued to the Herald last evening the following special forecast for the Auckland Province: —Strong winds from between south and south-west, reaching Ra le force in exposed positions. The weather is likelv to he cold and changeable, with some heavy passing showers and p'ossiblv hail. Seas very rough on the. west coast, rofigh on the east coast. ' YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland. —Heavy rain in the early morning was followed . by cloudy weather with occasional showers during the dav. Heavy rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, occurred last evening and the night was showery. The wind was moderate to fresh from the north-west. The maximum temperature was 58 degrees and the mioimum 51 degrees. Barometric pressure rose "until the late morning, when it steadied.'. _ Barometer, midnight 29.18 in. (988 millifrari) Midnight, Monday 29.00 in. (982 mlilibari) Wellington. —The early morning was overcast, with occasional light showers, hut conditions improved, although the dav remained cloudy and cold, with a light southerly wind v At 3 p.m. the temperature was 48.5 degrees, with barometric pressure a£ 29.20 in. (990.4 millibars).

Christchurch.—'The day was showery and cold with a slight south-west wind. The maximum temperature was 43.3 degrees. Tb? barometer rose slowly to 29.36m<fT994.3 millibars), at 5 p.m. &

Dunedin. —Heavy rain showers fell-in the morning, with sleet on the higher levels and snow on parts of Mount Cargill and Flagstaff. A cold southwest breeze prevailed and the temperature did not rise above 50 degrees. The barometer rose steadily to 29.42 in. (996.3 millibars), ;*?
