The inside of the trial tirass provided firm going and the times were last. The state ot the track was indicated early when Counterblast covered half a mile in 48s and Wild Talk ran six furlongs in 1.16 3-5. the last half-mile in 51s. Trench Fight covered a mile in 1.43, the first hall in 51s. Settlement, joined by The Wrecker at. the six-furlong post, recorded similar time. The Wrecker is to, remain in F. D. Jones' clmnje until after the Oainaru meeting. Mungatoon ran a mile in 1.44 3-5, the first half in 51 2-os. His stablemate, Waitaka, recorded 1.18 1-5 for sis furlongs.' Phenomenal and Gironde covered six furlongs in 1.18 2-5. Phenomenal had to be restrained early, but . Gironde finished on terms with him. Grey Honour attracted attention by galloping six furlongs in 1.16 1-5, tho first three in 37 2-os. Although his old log trouble was in evidence after his race at Ashburton, it is hoped to take him to Trentham. It is doubtful whether ho will stand up to much racing. Lady Leigh was under a nice hold while running four furlongs in 1.5 3-5. Miss Tasta. Heal Lady and Lady Graceful finished close together after running half a mile in 48 3-ss. Miss Tasta began smartly and was responsible for the fast time. Schooling of Jumpers .Cottingham (R. Beale) and Courtyard (A. Leach) showed much improvement in a bout over eight of the steeplechase fences Cottingham gave a dashing exhibition, taking each fence in his stride. He ontjumped Courtyard ■at each fence, but the latter completed his task satisfactorily. Top Rank (R. Register), who has been off the scene for a jong time, jumped five fejices carefully. Culverden (Register) negotiated six steeplechase fences. He risked one brush fence, but otherwise gave a good display. He will be ridden bv Register at Oamaru and should set a fast pace over the comparatively light fences there. Pontj- (Beale) was responsible for a fast display over four hurdles. Ho was ridden into his fences on this occasion and no fault could be found with his jumping. • He is to go to Trentham. . " Dropped Catch (Register) also showed tho benefit of his Ashburton experience by a smart efTort over four 'hurdles. Similar work was executed by In the Dark and Dranoel. L. J. Ellis Riding. Again L. J'. Ellis resumed riding work today after nearly a month's absence from the tracks. One of his mounts -iras Defaulter, who was given threetmarter pace work over six furlongs. ; Ellis intends to be at the Oamaru meeting, but he has not made any ■ engagements. Ho will be at Trentham next week. :• F. D. Jones will shortly train two . rising three-year-olds for Mr. J. It. McKenzie, who is on a trip to America. One is by. Hunting Song from Smoke Concert, dam of Gallant Fox, and cost Mr; McKeuzio 325gns. as a yearling. The other is by Lord Warden from « Knocklynn, dam of Ivnockfin, and cost 575gns. as a yearling. Both have been in steady work on Mr. McKenzie's own track, but th'ey have not been seriously tried. The southern steeplechasers Gold Wren and Pandine arrived from Dlined in this morning. Pnndino's injured leg is on the mend and it is expected he will be able to race. W. E. Sliand will ride them in their engagements. Prim ak was schooled over four steeplechase fences in tho middle of tho course. He will race on the second day only. , . , It is reported that Kahui,_ who created a big impression by his win at Awapuni, and is a candidate for the Trial Plato, will not bo coming to Trentham.
