SPORT OF CYCLING

ROAD RACING EVENTS HELLIWELL CUP CONTEST SUCCESS FOR W. KERR Splendid support was given the Mnnukau Cycling Club's fourth annual race of 25 miles for tlio Hoiliwell Cup, which was presented to the club in 1936 by .Mr. X. Jielliwell. A field of 49 riders started and 41 finished. As a spectacle, and as far as the middle and back-markers were concerned, the race was rather spoiled by the fact that a third of the field had completed a full lap before the remainder had started, owing to the small circuit of two miles and a-half having to be tiscd. All three placed riders, W. Kerr, H. E. Hi I ford and W. R. Walker, when overhauled by back-markers, from whom they received a lap start, paced with them. Both Kerr and Milford commenced racing this season, while Walker won two open events in 19,'53. Short in build Kerr displayed line stamina toward the closing stages when he drew steadily away from Hilford to win by 20 seconds. So intermingled did the field become that Hilford actually continued for another lap after finishing second. F. Trcdroa and A. W. Stonex triumphed by 13 seconds over the scratch riders, Harvey, Wilson, Johnson and Mynott, to be fastest in 67m 20s. Tredrea was first and fastest in a junior 25-mile last year when he clocked almost identical time, 67m 18s. The Papatoetoe and Northern Clubs combined in a 37 miles race from Papatoetoe to Bombay and back, 32 starting. Long markers practically monopolised the event and through an excellent pacing combination, especially on the return half of the race, J. C. Dolores, E. D. lvey and V. Ivey, filled the premier placings after a, closely contested final sprint in. D. E. Knight, of the Papatoetoe Club, was the fastest, although he just headed a big group at the finish, in which G. Webb was prominently placed to be second fastest. Knight took 98m 42s against J. W. Partridge's course record of 93m lis.

DEFEAT OP JUNIOR LYNN DALE CLUB'S RACES Tlie surprising: feature of the Lynndale Club's junior unpaced championship was the defeat of H. E. Baldwin by R. E. Clark, who won the title in 37m 58s against Baldwin's 38m 275. Baldwin was delayed for slightly over a minute on the opening lap of the 13 miles event when he fell, but ho made up 27 seconds on Clark after resuming. In road championship events Baldwin has boon most unfortunate. He becomes a senior next month. The present provincial 100 miles champion, H. F. Hawke, was far superior to the other scratch men, Hufhes and Barnett, in the Lynndale Club's senior 18 miles, for lie left both riders and caught the leaders, only to be outsprinted by D. Wrath all when a group of five contested the placings. Hughes lost ground from the start through persistent chain trouble, while W. A. Barnett lacked his usual energy and finished almost two minutes after Hawke. . The North Shore Club's continental stvle races over IS? miles developed into a duel between S. Brown and W. R. Kirker, two very promising junior riders. On the initial lap of the Lake Pupuke course the pair opened a gap on the rest of the field and it was only over the final lap that Brown was able to prove his superior stamina when he finished alone 18 seconds before Kirker, who was able, with 30 seconds on the scaled handicap, to tie with W. Young for first place A strenuous course of 20 nules was chosen by the Beach Haven Club for its senior event and the hard conditions'cave A. Elia an opportunity of displaving his ability, won after a bard finish with i. Wright, fastest the previous week, and was "also the fastest rider.
