WHANGAREI SHOW

OPENING CEREMONY PLANS FOR THE FUTURE FIXTURE'S HA I'll) GROWTH INTERESTING MODELS [DX TELKf.RAPH —OWN ( OiltU SPiiNUF.NT] AVHAXd AIUCI, Tuesday Whangarei's record winter show was opened to-dfiy. The large section adjoining the show buildings is covered by canvas, and the drill hall is also utilised for the display of the larger number of exhibits. The awards in the. majority of the sections have now been made. The annual show of the Northland Kennel Club is being held in conjunction with the winter show. The annual display of the Whangarei Poultrv. I,'igeon and Cage Bird Society will be held on Friday and Saturday. I he show was olliciallv opened by the Mavor of Whangarei, Mr. W. Jones, who spoke of the plans of the society for the acquisition of an area of 16 neres and the erection of a larger building to house the show, which had grown to such proportions that the present buildings were totally inndequpte. Other speakers included Mr. H. W. James, president of the society, Mr. .J. A. S. Mackay, chairman of the "Whangarei County Council, and Mr. E. L. Whimp, chairman of the Whangarei Harbour Board. A detachment of the A\ hangarei High School cadets, under Lieutenant H. E. Heward, was at the opening ceremony The Northland pig derby was run through the business section of the town this evening. Of the 15 competitors who started, not many reached the finishing line at the show entrance. A number of the pigs led their drivers by devious paths well off the track among the legs of the spectators on the footpaths. The winner was F. Madden and the runner-up G. Cork. The model section attracted much attention, and many spectators were absorbed in the working models. This section has greatly improved in the standard and the number of the exhibits. Auckland model builders are well represented in all the classes, especially the model engine section and the model yachts. An exhibit of outstanding interest is that of the pit head gear of the old Kamo coal mine. '1 his ■was made 61 years ago by the late Mr Robert Bolgrave for the late Mr. T. J'. Moody, who was manager of the old Kawakawa coal mines, and later opened up the Kamo coalfields. Further awards were made as foli lows:—
