FRANKLIN COUNTY SETTLERS SUBSCRIPTION TOWARD ROAD [FROM OL'R OWN CO ItI{KSI'ONDKNT] PUKEKOHE. Tuesday In order to secure the opening of a road from Lees Gully to I'ollok, giving the I'ollok and Awliitu districts a better outlet to Waiuku, settlers who will benefit have undertaken to subscribe £475. This was announced at the meeting of the Franklin County Council by Mr. M. J. Hatton, member for the Awliitu Riding, in which Pollok is situated. It was stated that the estimate of cost of legalisation and fencing, covering the deviations required and miles of entirely new route, was £619. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. li. Semple, had promised a grant of £6OOO for the formation and metalling. The council gave authority for the legalisation and fencing to proceed on the contributions being received from the settlers. Applications, to the Main Highways Board for £98,7'10, to meet requirements in the county for the current financial year, and to the Public Works Department for £30.851, were approved. The county engineer, Mr. A. C. Bottany, reported that the tar-sealing of the Pukekohe - Bombay highway might have to wait until after next summer, owing to the waterlogged condition of the new formation. Arrangements had been made to survey the Puni-Waiuku Road, via Aka Aka and Otaua, and the Tuakau-Pokeno highway preparatory to letting contracts for their reconstruction and sealing.
