RACING PROSPECTS

WAIPA MEETING GOOD FIELDS LISTED WIN AND PLACE POOLS W. G. PARK STEEPLECHASE ALL IRISH WELL FANCIED The current season in Auckland will bo brought to a conclusion with tho Waipa Racing Club's Winter Meeting nt To Awamutu to-day. Strong fields ,aro engaged and there should bo some excellent contests in spite of tho fact that the going is lfkely to bo soft after the rain early in the week. The course has been remodelled and many improvements made since it was used last in December, 1937, and fine weather is all that should bo required to ensure a very large attendance. The win and place system of betting will be used. The divisions in the Arapuni Hack Handicap will be treated as separate races on the totalisator. Following aro details of tho fields with a review of tho prospects in each raco by "Archer": —

11 . 1 5 —ANDREW KAY MEMORIAL HACK AND HUNTERS' STEEPLES, Of £2OO. and trophy valued at £25; about 1 • * 2V; miles. st. lb. st. lb. J» 0 Gascync •• . 9 7 Dark Rose 0 0 f Lack of recent racing may be against High' Quality and Lucidus will require to improve upon his running at Tauranga if he is to succeed. Mahala is; on the upgrade and, after her victory in the Bay of PJentv Steeplechase, appears to havo bright prospects. Celtic Lad has disappointed lately and a better prospect may be Wasp, who has run creditably in her recent outings. Cadger should have a chance if started but may • appeal more in the Orakau Hurdles, in • which he appears nicely placed. Royal - Nation won over hurdles at Tauranga and should again go well. Count lionsBillon, Bells of Bow and Gascyne have : chances and others who may add interest to the contest are British Sovereign, twice second to Bridegroom at Ellerslio, Car Leaf, Kittle and Tutor. The l'avourites may be MAHALA, ROYAL NATION, WASP. 11.55—ARAPUNI HACK HANDICAP, First Division Of £150; 6Va fur. st. lb. gt. lb. r Ora King . 9 8 Advanco Acre 8 0 Spearford ..92 Mio Generale 8 0 Neawiri ... 811 Riffraff ..80 Little Ruso . 8 7 "White Foam 8 0 •British Nation 8 0 Every Port . 8 0 Star Vaal ..82 Milanion ..80 Captain Princess Lu . 8 0 Treville ..81 Miss Valerie 8 0 Tea Gong ..81 -' Ora King is very speedy and has a ' chance in spite of his weight. Spearford failed tAvice at Tauranga, where he ' was out in front early each time. Usually he runs his best races from behind. Ngawiri won at To Rapa at her t last start and" a similar effort should place her well in the picture. Little Ruse will require to do better than at . Tauranga if he is to win but British Nation has been working nicely and may race well on his home course. Star Vaal, placed in his second start at Tauranga, and Captain Treville are speedy and Tea Gong js an improver, who may not be lonjj in repeating his Tauranga/ success.- Miss Valerie is another who is on- tho upgrade and should also bo dangerous. Advance Acre, White - Foam anc£Milanion may be best of the • others. Solid- support may come for « TEA GONG, MISS VALERIE, NGAWIRI.

12.40—WOODSTOCK STAKES, Of £300; IV* miles st. Ib. st. lb. Gold Vaals . 0 1 Philcourt ..78 King Key . 9 0 Gay Rebel . 7 7 Chcval -de • Du Manner . 7 7 Volco . . King Rev is capable under winter conditions but lias failed at his last few starts. Cheval do Volee and Galilee will be racing on their 'home track and should do better than they did at the Great Northern meeting but Master Brierly does not appeal. Maori Song has- to prove his worth at the distance but his brilliance should take him a long way. Gay Hose is nicely placed and should "bo prominent if she repeats her best. However, she is now very moody. Sergia, Jack Tar and Airam are capable of solid performances at the distance and Besiege, who has another engagement, should be dangerous if started. Gay Rebel and Du Maiirier may be likely lightweights and others who mav have to be reckoned with are Philcourt, Pocket Venus and Kaspian. The favourites maj' bo GOLD VAALS, GAY ROSE, ..MAORI SONG. 1.20 W. G. PARK STEEPLECHASE, Of £-100, and gold cup valued at £!>- !0s; *2Va miles st. Ib st. lb. The topweights Eri nation and All Irish raced well at Ellerslie recently and should again run prominently. I'm Tour and Biform have been performing consistently and should make forward showings: Lucid us and Mahala, who m engaged earlier, should have chances if started but London will roQuire to improve upon his running at Jan ration to be a likely placegetter. Pyrenees, in spit h* of the fact that ho baulked while schooling on I hursday, jPAV have to be reckoned with, as he is likely (o jump better in company Saint i "hisk and .Smiling Thru' may be dangerous light weights and the likeliest of' t"0 others may be Roxy and Ureklaw. f>ome who may be in demand are ALL IRISH, • . Mia Acrea and Lady England both fell at their last starts but have chances in this company. Cadger is very fit and should give a good account of himself. King Musk may perform creditably, but High Tea and Jewelled Girdle may require more schooling before showing form as hurdlers. Capp.v is likely to improve upon his running at Ellerslio and Chikara, who has been placed at his last two starts, should go well. General Ruse may be all the bettor for his race at Tauranga, where he was third, and the likeliest of the others may be Torch, Siwel and Green Label. Investors may prefer CADGER, INNESS LAD, LADY ENGLAND.

3.2O—PATERANGI HANDICAP, Of £200; 7 fur. st. lb. st. lb. Silver Jubilee is a doubtful runner and Orate, who has been working nicely, is now uncertain at tlie barrier. Rovevrus has a chance to make amends for his failures at Ellerslie_ and Young Paddon appears to be regaining form. Gay Seton and Sergia should run creditable races and solid efforts may be expected from Besiege, Marie's Acre and Brazilian, who are all in good order. Bachelor King may require a race but Very Glad, Te Monowai and Ladv Meath may all run prominently. Requiem, Alyth, May Song and Eastern Heir aro also possibilities. The primo fancies may include BESIEGE, MARIE'S ACRE, VERY GLAD.

4.O—HAIRINI HACK HANDICAP, Of £200: 9 fur. st. lb. % st. lb. Ora King . 9 7 Right Royal 8 0 Hcssketoon . 9 -1 Silver Glow. 8 0 Loombination 9 0 Wild Aero . 8 0 Racecamp • . 9 0 Survalyon . 8 0 Spinning Nuipapa ... 8 0 Wheel... 9 0 Diversity ..80 Prival ..85 Simla ... 8 0 Long Span . 8 5 Maereana ..80 Erlick . . 8 -1 General Riske 8 0 "Racelino • • . 8 3 Ora King should not bo without prospects but has- an earlier engagement over a shorter distance, which might suit him better. Hessketoon and Loombination are capable of solid efforts, while Racecamp and Spinning Wheel are in winning form and very fit. Slight improvement upon his running at Ellerslio would make Prival difficult to beat, while Erlick, Long Span and Raceline are in a class 111 wnich they; have previously performed well. Right Royal, Silver Glow and Wild Acre are not without prospects and other possibilities aro Nuipapa, Simla and Maereana. The best supported may be SPINNING WHEEL. RACECAMP, PRIVAL.
