Symphony Concert The use of modern lighting effects will be a feature of the concert to be given in the Town Hall by the Auckland Symphony Orchestra next Thursday night. During the items the only lighting in the hall will be concentrated on tho orchestra itself, which is to sit on a new platform almost twice_ the sizo of the present one. This, it is thought, will allow a better arrangement of the instruments to be carried out. Chopin's first concerto is among tho items to be performed, tho pianist being Paul Schramm. Sydney Eisteddfod The syllabus of the sixth City of Sydney 'Eisteddfod and Inter-State choral championship has been received. Tlio Eisteddfod will be held at the Sydney Town Hall and other halls from August 30 to September 9, and will feature all the customary choral, operatic aria, lieder, instrumental and speech training sections. In addition an entirely new group for folk songs and a series of contests for youthful performers in operatic aria, oratorio and Australian composers' songs, have been introduced. Particular importance is attached to tho new musical composition section, which includes compositions for a lyric and for a piano solo. Lehmann Vignette "Lehmann has cultivated the Viennese art of living well and fully to a high degree," writes David Ewen in his recently-published "Men and Women Who Make Music," about the singer, whoso last concert will be given in the Town Hall to-night. "There is nothing effete and jadej about her. Her enthusiasms are many, and always fresh and alive. Her life is crowded with activity and diversion. Music, of course, is the major sphere of her activity. But Lehmann would not be a true Viennese in temperament if music, and music alone, dominated her life. She loves to read good literature—and reads it voraciouslv. Better still, she loves to write it. Writing to her is an essential artistic expression." University Recital A programme of music by J. S. Bach will be played at the third Sunday afternoon recital to be held at the Auckland University College hall tomorrow. Movements from three of Bach's concertos will open the programme, and these will be followed by keyboard music from the "48" and tho Partita No. 2. Splendid examples of Bach's choral music will be given in a church cantata and numbers from the St. Matthew Passion and the B minor Mass, while a chorale will be sung and compared with its later use by Wagner. An organ piece and Bach's orchestral suite No. 2, which includes the movement from which the "air of the G String" has been arranged, will also be played.
