SOUTH-EAST EUROPE

POLITICS AND ECONOMICS

CHATHAM HOUSE (The Royal Institute of International Affairs), again puts out the very volume to meet the need of tho moment. European high diplomacy is concentrated on the strugglo by political and economic means between the acquisitive and annexationist Powers and those others who are.leagued together in defence of freedom. Tho lot of those who in these times would keep pace with events gives: them no pause and not much hope. No sooner had Chatham House sent this volume to tho printer than it had to be withdrawn, revised, and enlarged to take account of tho seizure of Czecho-Slovakia, tho invasion of Albania, the British and French guarantees to Poland, Rumania, and Greece. Jt is no longer necessary to assert that a volume from Chatham House •n ' the conditions, rivalries, issues centred in South-East Europe may bo relied on to givo the thorough facts, well set out for easy reference. The centre of gravity shifts quickly, and at tho moment, it is Danzig that monopolises tho fears and tho speculations. Poland cannot by any geographic twist be included in " South-East " Europe. Yet, the six countries that aro included in tho present volume — Hungary, Rumania, Yugo -SI a via, Greece, Bulgaria. Turkey—each contributes essential factors to the general problem. Tho volume is well supplied with maps. "South-Eastern Europe" (Royal Institute Press"' erna^ona ' Affairs: Oxford University
