CHANGE IN THE CONTROL
For 37 years there has been a branch of the New Zealand Post Office at Fanning Island, 200 miles north of the equator, although it. is not a part of New Zealand territory. This arrangement ceased recently and the postal affairs of the island will in future be under the control of tli<« High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, who is in charge of the Gilbert and Elhce Islands colony. The postmaster was the superintendent, of the cable staff. The cable station was opened in )90'2, the moist adventurous incident in its career occurring in ] 5)1-1, when it was raided by a party from the German cruiser Nurnberg.
