CASE AGAINST FATHER
REGISTRATION OF BIRTH
PROSECUTION FOR DELAY [from our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Wednesday The father of six children, Joseph W. Chandler, baker, of Pukekohe, was ordered to pay 10s Court fees in the Pukekohe Court to-day for failing to register the birth of a child within 62 days. Defendant did not appear. Sergeant T. Kelly said that a daughter was born to defendant on October 7. He called at the Pukekohe Post Office on December 17 to. register the birth. As this was later than the 6-2 days, the postmaster asked liini for the 5s penal fee specified in the Act. He did not have this nor the complete particulars required for registration, but promised to return and ellect the registration. Evidence was given that, although two .letters tvere written to defendant reminding him of his obligation, ho did not return to complete the registration.
The sergeant said that, once a prosecution was instituted, the registration could not be effected until the case was dealt with by the Court. Registration was free within the 62 days.
