OVER £IOOO SECURED
THE CANCER CAMPAIGN AUCKLAND CENTRE APPEAL MANY RETURNS TO COME It is now certain that £IOOO will be substantially exceeded when all the returns are received from the collection conducted on Wednesday by the Auckland Centre of the Red Cross Society as a result of an appeal by the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, for funds for the British Empire Campaign Society. The object of the appeal - is the establishment of a research department at the Auckland Hospital. The total sum received up to yesterday was £995, of which over £7OO was collected in Auckland and. suburbs. There are still between 20 and 30 returns to come, mainly from the smaller centres in thd country, but there are several centres from which considerable sums should result, including Rotorua, Morrinsville, Waihi and Thames. The secretary of the Red Cross Society, Mr. A. A. Harker, expressed thanks yesterday to the staff of the treasury department of the Auckland Transport Board, who had given their services for the counting of the receipts. Mr. Harker also referred to the fact that the proprietors of the Civic Amusement Park had donated the takings from Tuesday night's entertainment.
