FIFTY YEARS AGO
COLONIAL FEDERATION The formation of Australian and Canadian commonwealths was the chief interest of the Federation League which was active in England 50 years ago, the following reference being taken from the New Zealand Hebald of May 26, 1889: — "Lord Rosebery, at the annual meeting of the league, regretted that the Federal propaganda had not made greater way in Australia, but on the other hand he was pleased to say the movement had progressed in Canada. He suggested that parties of workmen should be sent to the colonies in the warships at the Imperial expense, in order to acquire particular knowledge of the colonial trade and report thereon. Lord Carnavon asserted that the thorough state into which the colonies had put their defences, and the completeness of their preparations to resist a foreign invader, put England to the blush. He regretted the Colonial Office was not in sympathy with the object of the league, ancl claimed that federation was essential to the well being of the Empire."
