VISIT TO KEY POINTS GERMAN FORTIFICATIONS GOERING AVOIDS MADRID SECRET POLICE WARNING By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Independent Cable Service (Received May 14, 7.30 p.m.) BERLIN, May 14 Herr Hitler will begin to-morrow a fortnight's visit to key points in the German fortifications, first going to the Siegfried Line in the west, and thence to the east. He will thoroughly examine the positions and equipment of the troops on the whole eastern frontier, including the Baltic and East Prussia.
1* icld-Marshal Goering returned from his Mediterranean cruise last night. It is reported he cancelled his visit to Madrid after the Gestapo had warned him that the city was full of Republicans, who were willing to risk a shot at a distinguished Nazi. In bidding farewell to 10,000 Italian and German pilots, mechanics and antiaircraft units at the Barajas aerodrome, General Franco said Spain's Air Force had drawn the bow and was ready to shoot. It was impossible that Spain should simply enter upon a period of peace.
The Air Force must always be ready to render the first service. The war in which the Italians and Germans had assisted Spain had Riven her faith and confidence in her mastery, in herself and in her unity and sacred brotherhood. FRANCO SEEKS CREDITS (Independent Cable Service LONDON, May 12 The Financial News says private advices from Paris and Amsterdam confirm rumours that General Franco is seeking £20,000,000 of foreign exchange credit in London or Amsterdam merely as an initial amount.
