EVENTS ON. MANUKAU CONTESTS FOR TWO CUPS TAMAKI WINS CHALLENGE Keen yachting was witnessed on the Manukau Harbour, when the inter-club contests for the Goodfellowship and Harmony Cups, between representatives of the Manukau Yacht and Motor-boat and Takapuna Boating Clubs were sailed in a good south-west breeze. These contests are sailed in Z class boats, and the Goodfellowship Cup is the trophy for the senior members and the Harmony Cup is competed for by the juniors. This was the ninth annual contest for the Goodfellowship Cup, and the Takapuna Boating Club retained it by defeating the Manukau crew by one second. The draw for boats resulted in tho Takacrew, J. J. Mackay and F. Thomas, drawing Tamaki, whilo the Manukau crew, ( E. Laird and D. McLeod. drew Zippa. Tamaki had tho better of the start, and maintained its advantage to the first mark, but Zippa closed on her as they fetched the second | mark of tho triangular course. On the run homo, Zippa had tho measure of Tamaki, but the latter was to windward, and an exciting contest ended as the Takapuna representative crossed the line about a foot ahead. The juniors sailed three races for the Harmony Cup, in which Manukau won two, thereby retaining tho trophy. The first race was won by Manukau, while Takapuna evened matters in tho second. Tho final contest saw some keen sailing, in which the Manukau craw, S. Smith and J. F. Taylor, narrowly defoated tho Takapuna representatives, J. Brady and S. Smytho. by 255. A challenge race sailed between representatives of the Manukau. Takapuna and Tamaki Clubs, resulted in a close race, which • tho Tamaki Club, represented by the commodore, W. A. Wilkinson, won by '-235. The draw for boats resulted: —Tamaki (.Zippa), Takapuna (Tamaki), and Manukau (Valeta). Zippa had the best of a good start i nnd maintained her lead throughout. At the conclusion of the contests the visitors were entertained in the clubhouse. HAMILTON CLUB'S CONTEST QUEST WINS MORRIS CUP [.FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAMILTON. Sunday By coming second in the final of the Hamilton Yacht Club's contests. Quest won the Morris Cup. Rainins: 22 points. Ida was second with 20 points, while Kim nained 14 points. In tho final race in the series there was a good breeze. Only three boats started and Ida and Quest were fighting it out all the way. Ida rounded Gowers mark 17s ahead of Quest, with Edola follojving closely. Tho second time round the mark Ida was only 13s ahead and she crossed the line 7s in front of Quest, having completed the course in lh lm 465. The times were:—lda, 3h 41m 455: Queßt. 3h 31m 525; Edola. 3h 48m 12s. HERNE BAY JUNIOR CLUB The Heme Bay Junior Yacht Club brought its season to a close on Satnrday afternoon with a race for its Silver Fern class over the usual course, starting and finishing off Ponsonby Wharf A light breeze from the south prevailed at the start, veering to the south-west and freshening when the boats wero about half-way round the course. „ , From a good start Trisba was first away, closely followed by Rhythm. Electra. Tariere. Silver Fern, Kandy Kid and Valerie. Spinnakers were set for the run to Rona Buoy, where they were chanored over and fot the next leg to Pile Beacon. Rhythm passed Trisha soon after the start and was first round the various marks. Makinn the turn at the Pile beacon the times were:— Rhythm. 2h 42m 2s: Valerie, 2h 42m 20s: Kandy Kid, 2h 44m; Tapere, 2h 44m 30s: Silver Fern, 2h 45m; Trisha, 2h 45m 455:. Electra. 2h 4«m. Spinnakers were asrain ' carried for the run back to Curran Street and Tapere ran into second place, passintt both Kandy Kid and Valerie, After rounding Rona Buoy for the second time the boats had their first beat to windward and Rhythm further increased her • lead, while Tapero drew away from Silver Fern and Valerie. , . .
