SPECIAL "CHILDREN'S ISSUE"
By RONALD YOUNGER
gEVEN fine pictorial stamps, comprising a special "Children's Issue." .are in an interesting new series from Russia. The designs give glimpses of work and play in schools. Shown in the illustration is the 80 kopecs value, which is printed in green. The design shows boys playing with models of an aeroplane, a racing yacht, a cutter and a railway locomotive —• models which they themselves have constructed. The boy with the model 'plane is just about to launch it into the air for a flight. This is the first occasion on which a model aeroplane has appeared in a postage stamp design. This design is repeated on the 50 kopecs value, which is printed in deep blue. • There are four other designs. That on the 10 kopecs (biue-green), shows a nurse weighing a smiling baby—while his mother stands by. s The 15 kopecs (green), shows a group of eight children, with their nurse, out for a walk. They have stopped to look at a statue in a park. A scene at the first special "Health" Camp on the Crimean Coast is given on

the 30 kopecs (deep red). A group of boys playiilg ball is the main subject, of this design, while to the left a boy trumpeter is shown. The final design, that appearing on the 20 kopecs (purple), and 40 kopecs (red-brown) j values, is very attractive. It shows four children who are study-
ing science. Two girls and a boy are each peering into a microscope, while a third girl is reading from a notebook. This fine design, which illustrates modern educational methods, is perhaps the most interesting of the series. The colouring of the stamps is bright, and they are clearly printed. Copies are available now.
