HAWKE'S BAY TITLES AUCKLANOER PROMINENT LADIES' DOUBLES EVENT {by texegbaph—own correspondent] HASTINGS Wednesday Although defeated in the early round of the ladies' singles, the Aucklander Miss M. Macfarlane, partnered by Miss M. Budd, Wellington, succeeded in winning the ladies' doubles championship at the Hawke's Bay Easter tournament. In the final they defeated two Hawke's Bay representatives, Misses Glenny and Evans, 3—6, 6—5, 6 —4. After taking the first set comfortably, the local pair led I—l in the second. Misses Macfarlane and Budd then staged a splendid recovery to take the set, and continued on, playing solid although not especially brilliant tennis, to clinch the deciding set. In reaching the final the winners defeated Miss J. St. George (Auckland) and Miss M. Dickie (Taranaki) comfortably in straight sets. The men's singles final was easily won by the Wairarapa champion, Hawksworth, who proved altogether too deadly for K. Dyer (Wellington), winning f> —•'}, »i —t. PROMINENT PLAYER DEPARTURE OF GUNN A prominent Auckland tennis player, J. W. Gunn. left Auckland last night cn route to London. He will leave by the Port Brisbane on Friday from Wanganui. Gunn, who is to continue his accountancy profession in London, hopes to play in the Wimbledon tennis tournament in June.

Gunn's departure will be a loss to Auckland tennis and to the Remuera Club, of which he was a member. With N. F. Bedford, he is the present holder of the Isew Zealand doubles title, while the previous season he annexed the combined doubles championship with Miss Margaret Beverley.
