EASTER BOWLING

TOURNEY CONCLUDES OPEN FOURS? TO WEST END HILLSBORO'S WEAK OPPOSITION The final game in the Easter Fours, the last event to bo decided in the Auckland Bowling Centre's Easter tournament, was played yesterday afternoon on the Carlton Club's green in fine but dull weather. Victory went 1 o the West End team skipped by W. Bremner, the opposing Hillsboro combination, in charge of R. Buckle, being easily defeated by 25 points to 12. The game ended on the 19th head. Whether it was the fast pace of the trreen or the importance of the occasion, the fact remained that the Hillsboro team, more particularly the inside members, completely failed to reproduce (he form that had been the means of the rink going so far in the competition, Oil the other hand Bremner's rink, practically a new nud untried combination, showed, no evidence of strain. The West End players performed splendidly, quickly mastering: (he strength of the green and building up heads which gave the skip the key position on nearly every occasion. A* a spectacle, however, the game fell fur short of expectations, there being an absence of that sparkle which relieves the monotony of a final struggle for supremacy. 11l the early stages the Hillsboro skin did call on his men for some fast shols in an effort to upset the strong positions held b.v the opposition, but these were not well enough executed to bring about the desired changes, and this form of attack was not persevered with. However, Hillshoro's plan of trying to play the West End four at its own game, dead drawing, proved euually futile.

Accurate Drawing Early in the game it was evident that the accurate drawing powers of the winniug team were likely to prove a decidinK factor and the further the game progressed the more apparent this became. As in previous games, the West End lead, H. Newell, set a good example. He was troubled b.v the good play of Eagles, his immediate opponent, for a time, but once he had gauged the green he led well up to the jack. W. Stichbury, West End?s number two player, quickly found his length and a perfect toucher on the opening head gave him complete confidence. Like the lead, ho kept well up on the head, and the combined work of these two players made Hillsboro's task very difficult. N. Donaldson succeeded in retrieving any adverse positions and placed bowls according to his skip's directions. He gave a brilliant exhibition of drawing, some of his shots being really fine efforts. Altogether he played an excellent number three game, although he had little opposition. W. Bremner piloted his young team in his usual quiet manner and without any great variety in his play. Wflen called upon to executo any particular movement he exhibited all his old powers of accuracy in drawing. He was not called upon to do much driving, as on most occasions a firm draw was all that was required.

Erratic Bowling F. Eagles, the Hillsboro lead, held on to his task well for a time, but later his play became erratic. He played too many short and narrow bowls. Both" numbers two and three. Drake and Lorimcr, respectively, were decidedly oft colour. What Buckle really required on the day' was a fast and accurate driver, and neither of these two players exhibited any evidence of outstanding ability. The Hillsboro skip, R. Buckle, who relied on his drawing powers to save many awkward positions, was not at all happy. Firstly, lon much responsibility rested on him and secondly he would have had to draw to inches all the time to do any good. On the opening head Bremner had a chance to secure five shots, but lie played too wide and gained only two. Bnckle saved two shots on the fifth head, but West End scored a single and was ahead with the score at 7—l. West iEnd established a commanding lead of 10 points as a result of scores of three and two on the seventh and eighth heads respectively. Buckfe exhibited his best saving shots of the game when he drew two good bowls ir. to beat two close bowls held by the opposition. This took place on the ninth head and the score was then 12—1 in favour of West End. The score was 16—8 after Buckle had scored a single and a two, the latter being the result of enterprising work on the part of Buckle, whose fas{ shot sent the jack back to two of his own bowls. West End Dominant

The Hillsboro run of scoring was shortlived. Eagles held a good shot on the 15th head, but Drake sent the West End lead's bowl on the wing into shot. Donaldson added another and so did Bremner to make it three. Another three to West End on the 16th head practically settled the issue.. Even scoring took place over the next three beads, the game finishing on the 19th. The final score was:—F. Newell, W. Stichbury, N. Donaldson, W. Bremner (West End), 25, v. F. Eagles, Drake, R. Dormer, R. Buckle (Hillsboro), 12. In presenting the prizes, the president of the Auckland Bowling Centre, Mr. W. J. Truscott. remarked on the outstanding success of the tournament. It was, he said, a fitting climax to a most successful season. He complimented W. Bremner on his victory and on his retention of such good form over a long period of years lie also congratulated the Hillsboro representatives on their showing throughout the tourney and paid a tribute to the prominence the club's players had gained in the Auckland Centre's events during the season.
