PEOPLE OF THE EAST
PROSPERITY OF JAVA VISITOR S IMPRESSIONS Comparison of the various nationalities seen on a round-trip to the East was made by Mr. E. C. Banks, of Tauranga,, on his return to Auckland yesterday by the Roggeveen, accompanied by Mrs. Banks. He said the French rule of Noumea was not of the happiest order, being contrasted with the great prosperity of Java under tho Dutch, while the British administration of Singapore appeared to" be admirably controlled
Java was the most attractive conn* try visited. It reminded him so much of New Zealand, he said, especially in the bushlands, where shrubs and ferns identical with those of the Dominion could be found in profusion, even, at the roadside. The place was like a great garden, every inch being cultivated, even in the highlands up to 2000 ft. It was a tremendously rich country, where everyone seemed to be happy ancl con tented.
