POLAR CAMP
ELLSWORTH'S PLAN ANTARCTIC WINTER EXPEDITION IN 1941 SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH By Telograph—PrcßS Association —Copyright (Received February 28, 10.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 28 The American explorer Mr. Lincoln Ellsworth to-day announced a new expedition' to the Antarctic in 1941, when he will camp the entire winter at the South Pole, with two. companions "to pursue observations of importance in several branches of scientific research."
Mr. Ellsworth is not certain whether he will leave for the south from Australia or New Zealand. He will probably use two aeroplanes and dig them in at the pole, flying from the Bay of Whales to the pole, a distance of 700 miles. Mr. Ellsworth pointed out that leading subjects of research there would be meteorological conditions and the ionisation of the atmospheric layers. He added: "1 also proposo to name as the 'American Highland' the 81,000 square miles of highly-elevated land south of Princess Elizabeth Land, over which 1 flew and which I claimed for the United States this year.''
