INCOME TAX DEMANDS
MANY NOT RECEIVED LAST DAY BEFORE PENALTY Concern has been caused by the nonarrival of income tax demands in the case of a number of taxpayers, in spite of the fact that to-day is the last day before tho imposition of the 5 per cent penalty. No information was available in Auckland yesterday as to tho cause of tho delay, but it was stated that tho department probably had not yet completed some taxpayers' accounts. "If a taxpayer is in any doubt, ho should either send a remittance to Wellington or ascertain the correct position," said an official of the Land and Income Tax Department in Auckland yesterday. "We liavo had numerous inquiries all day." Tho official advised taxpayers who had not received their demands to send a remittance to Wellington, if the amount of tho tax was known, or to pay tho sum into tho public account of the Bank of New Zealand. If a cheque were used it should be left open. The special public account slip, marked "Ty.—-30A" should bo filled in, tho effect of this being to save exchange oil cheques sr.st to Wellington. Instead of taking this course, tho taxpayer could send a telegram to the department or merely await tho arrival of the demand. The latter was risky, however, as tho Commissioner of Taxes did not accept responsibility for demands not being received, provided the forms had been posted. The annual circular issued by 'die department also placed the onus ,<;>n tho taxpayer as it stated that taxpayers who aid not receive a demand should notify the department. .. . .
