INSPECTION OF WORKS
VISITING ENGINEERS ARRANGEMENTS FOR TO-DAY Engineering works within easy distance of Auckland were inspected yesterday by over 100 engineers from various parts of the Dominion. They were all members of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers, who have been attending the annual conference here. The party assembled at thp Auckland University College in the morning, and first inspected the Scroggv Hill grade easement on the North Auckland railway line. From there they travelled to the filter station of the city water supply system just past Titirangi. The party was conducted over the station by the city waterworks engineer, Mr. A. D. Mead. The visitors were greatly impressed with the views obtained along the scenic drive. A stop was mado at Waiatarua for lunch, after which the Nihotupu Dam was inspected. Further on, members of the party climbed to tho Pukematapeo trig station, and then tho journey was continued to Swanson. Construction work on the main highway between Swanson and Henderson also interested the engineers. The next call was at tho Hobsonville air base, and construction works at the Whenuapai aerodrome were also inspected. The party then returned to Auckland. The programme for to-day includes visits to the King's Wharf power station, an asbestos-cement and a glass works at Penrose, and the railway workshops at Otahuhu in tho morning, and an inspection of road works in the city and a harbour excursion in the afternoon. The majority of the visitors will leave for their homes in tho south to-night.
