THE HOUSE SHORTAGE
Sir, —Our Prime Minister says it is most urgent that more houses should be built for people who cannot get houses. If he is sincere he surely can easily find a remedy. We have been told that the Government is building a house every 40 minutes. Well, instead of importing carpenters, why not allow carpenters to work Saturday forenoon and with the same number of carpenters employed we would have over 300 houses per year. The Government is employing two shifts of 10 hours to build the Social Security building at Wellington, if the house shortage is so acute and the Government so sympathetic, why not let the workers build homes for themselves and lift these stupid restrictions. £)o not import more carpenters, but give our own carpenters the extra wages for extra hours worked. I have no doubt if we allowed carpenters, plumbers and others to work 50 hours per week at ordinary pay we would have an overwhelming majority only too pleased to in Tease their wages by £1 10s a week and the house shortage would show an improvement by about 1000 extra houses being built per year. Common Sense.
