WEST COAST PORT

JACKSON'S BAY WHARF CONSTRUCTION COMPLETED [by telegraph—OWN con respondent] GIiEYMOUTH, Monday A new wharf was completed recently at Jackson's Bay, a small settlement about 200 miles south of Hokitika. The wharf, which was constructed primarily to facilitate the handling of timber from the bay and the surrounding country, is 202 ft. long and 26ft. wide, and it has been constructed entirely of Australian hardwood. A pair of rails lias been laid along the approach to the wharf, which will enable cargo to be transported from ships to shore with a minimum of handling. In the past, all supplies have been landed on the beach by surf boats. The depth of water available for shipping at low tide is 20ft., this being almost sufficient to accommodate large overseas vessels. Tho bay is sheltered by hills on all sides, except the northeast, .and on several occasions ships have sheltered there during rough weather. The wharf was constructed for the Public Works Department by the Rope Construction Company, Auckland.
