FORM OF EXHIBIT

CENTENNIAL DISPLAY THE UNIVERSITIES' PART CRITICISM IN AUCKLAND Criticism of the proposed form of university representation at the Centennial Exhibition, consisting of a display of photographs, was expressed by members of the Auckland University College Council at a meeting of the. council yesterday. It was suggested that ,something symbolic of university life, not necessarily expressed in photographs. should be devised to cover such an important phase of the cxnibition. The committee sp'iciiilij appointed to consider the subiwt on behalf of a!i New Zealand universities reported that cwing to the limitation of space in the exhibition, it woulJ be inadvisable to attempt anything more ambitious than a display of photographs. The subject of the photographs could bo left to each individual college, but it was probable that they would include exteriors and some interiors. "It would seem a terrible thing for universities to have nothing but a display of dull photographs in the exhibition," said Mr. G. Grey Campbell. "It would be better to have Something symbolic of university life, and in this, ivspcejt the architectural department might help." A photographic display would not be worthv of a body like a university, said Mr. A. jtl. Johnstone, K.C. it, was unfortunate that so small an allotment of space had been granted to the universities. . Professor C. R. Knight said the success of a photographic display would depend largely on the type ol pictuies shown. If they illustrated university life as a whole they could be of general interest. The matter was referred to the education committee to report back to the council
