DANGER AVERTED
SCRUB FIRES AT TAUPO BLOCKED BY PREVIOUS BURN [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN" COB RESPOND EST] TAUPO. Sunday •, The scrub fires which broke but near Taupo on Monday and have been raging in thick scrub between Taupo and neighbouring forestry plantations throughout the week have apparently burned out.
Although burning fiercely on Friday* the outbreak on the right-hand side of the Taupo-Xapier road reached a large area of scrub which was swc-pt by fire last year, and this acted as a natural firebreak. Late on Friday night the fire gradually died away. The flames on the left-hand side of the highway, as predicted, climbed tha Tauhara Mountain, and by the time they had reached half-way up had diminished in vigour and eventually died out.
At present there is no sign of fire in the affected area. However, there has been no rain for several weeks, and the country is particularly dry.
