meeting at takapuna OPENING OF ALISON PARK .AUCKLAND CLUB'S CARNIVAL ATHLETICS AND CYCLING The first athletic meeting to be held B t Alison Park, Takapuna, was conducted bv the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club on Saturday afternoon. The sports ground is the area formerly owned by the Takapuna Jockey Club, which presented it to the Devcnporl Borough Council. The Hon. J). W. Alison, on behalf of the Takapuna Jockey Club, congratulated the Auckland Club upon its excellent programme ar.d upon the high standard displayed in the various events. Mr. \V. CARNIVAL AT PAEROA SHARPLEY'S FAST, HURDLING S [by telegraph—OWN CORRESPONDENT] PAEROA, Sunday With a parade of nearly 400 athletes and ' members of local sports clubs, including 160 Paeroa and visiting competitors, the Physical Fitness Week celebrations opened most auspiciously at the Paeroa Domain yesterday in fine weather. There were large entries, including some of the most prominent athletes in the province. The carnival was patronised by several thousand people Outstanding among the Lompetitors was P. F. Sharpley, of Hastings, New Zealand amateur hurdles champion, who made a Bpecia! trip by aeroplane to the sports and engaged in the hurdles races. A special match race *as staged between the Ellerslio and Hamilton relay teams, which had met at Carlaw Park several weeks previously. After one run, in fbich the baton was dropped, the race was rerun and resulted in a narrow win for the Hamilton team, R. Joyes, T. Roner, C. Goosman and A. J. Dcnz. They defeated C. Barker, O. McManus, W. Dovell and J- HcManus in 44 1-53, this being one second faster than the time for the provincial relay cbaniDionship. I' The parade assembled at 3 p.m., and, led by the Paeroa Municipal Band, circled tho ground and was then drawn up before the grandstand, where the athletes were addressed by. the Mayor, Mr. W. M. Marshall, on tho objects of Fitness Week. Among those participating in the parade were members of »he territorials, cadets, Boy Scouts, local Bt >d visiting athletic club members, repre- ' jentatives of the bowling, cricket, croquet. A large crowd witnessed the sports, which were of an excellent standard and included, besides cycling, running and field events, a popular highland section run by the Caledonian Society.
