FUTURE EMPLOYMENT
MEN ON NO. IB SCHEME ABSORPTION IN INDUSTRY OTHER AVENUES OF WORK The future of men engaged on the No. 13 fjcheme of subsidised work when the Employment Promotion Fund ceases to exist after the introduction of the social security scheme on April 1, was explained j-esterday by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb. He said it was hoped that, with the expansion of industry throughout the country, numbers of relief workers would be found permanent employment.
Mr. Webb stated that men who could not be placed in industry would be transferred to other work. They would be engaged in afforestation and on land developmental schemes, (ind provision had already been made to absorb large numbers of single men from No. 13 scheme work. It was the Government's intention to see that work was provided for every man who was willing to work. STAFFS ON PUBLIC WORKS REDUCTION POLICY DENIED ' A denial that the Government was cutting down on public works was made by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Scmple, yesterday. Ho added that the transference of men from local body work on scheme No. 13 to industry and to other employment had no doubt been responsible for the statements. Many men on public works bad gone to seasonal employment, but they were wanted back when their special employment was finished. The Government was putting men on some of tho bigger jobs, not putting them off.
